Gardeners Hatton is committed to providing gardening and grounds care services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. We recognise that high standards of health and safety are integral to professional gardening, landscape maintenance and related activities carried out at residential, commercial and communal properties.

The purpose of this policy is to set out our approach to managing risks associated with gardening work, including the use of machinery, tools, vehicles, substances and manual handling, and to ensure continual improvement in our health and safety performance.

Health and Safety Objectives

Our primary health and safety objectives are to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our gardening activities. We aim to comply with all applicable health and safety laws and relevant industry guidance, and to adopt safe systems of work wherever we operate. Safety considerations are built into our planning, daily operations and supervision of work on every site.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Gardeners Hatton has overall responsibility for health and safety across the company. Management will:

Ensure that this policy is implemented, maintained and reviewed regularly. Provide suitable resources, information, instruction and training to enable employees to work safely. Assess the risks associated with our gardening operations and introduce effective control measures. Select and maintain tools, machinery and equipment so they are safe and fit for purpose. Monitor working practices to confirm that safety procedures are followed on all sites. Investigate incidents and near misses to identify causes and prevent recurrence.

Managers and supervisors are expected to lead by example, promoting a positive safety culture in every aspect of gardening work, from lawn care and hedge trimming to tree work and seasonal planting.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees of Gardeners Hatton have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must:

Follow all safety instructions, training and site-specific rules. Use machinery, tools, vehicles and equipment only as trained and authorised. Wear and correctly use the personal protective equipment provided. Report hazards, defects, incidents and near misses without delay. Refrain from any behaviour that could endanger themselves or others, including misuse of equipment or working under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Every gardener, labourer, supervisor and driver plays a vital role in maintaining safe working conditions and preventing harm, regardless of their level of experience or area of work.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Gardeners Hatton will carry out risk assessments for our typical gardening and grounds maintenance tasks, such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, weeding, pruning, tree work, use of power tools and handling of green waste. Site-specific risks, including uneven ground, restricted access, utilities, weather conditions and presence of the public, will be considered before work begins.

Safe systems of work will be developed and communicated to employees, and may include controls such as designated exclusion zones, supervision, use of guards and safety devices, correct manual handling techniques, and clear traffic routes for vehicles and machinery. Work methods may be adapted in response to changing conditions, for example high winds, extreme heat or reduced visibility.

Training and Competence

We will ensure that employees are competent to carry out their gardening duties safely. This includes providing induction training, task-specific instruction, refresher training and, where relevant, recognised qualifications for operating machinery or equipment.

Training will cover topics such as safe use of mowers, trimmers and blowers, manual handling of soil, plants and materials, safe handling and storage of fuels and other substances, working at height where applicable, and emergency procedures. Records of training and competence will be maintained and updated as roles or equipment change.

Machinery, Tools and Equipment

Gardeners Hatton will provide suitable and well-maintained machinery, tools and equipment for all gardening operations. We will:

Select equipment that is appropriate for the task and environment. Carry out regular inspections, servicing and maintenance in line with manufacturers recommendations. Remove defective equipment from use until it is repaired or replaced. Ensure guards, safety devices and controls are in place and functioning. Personal Protective Equipment

Employees are required to use the PPE supplied, keep it in good condition, and report loss or damage so that it can be replaced promptly.

Chemicals and Hazardous Substances

Where Gardeners Hatton uses fuels, oils, cleaning agents or other hazardous substances, appropriate assessments will be carried out and control measures implemented. Substances will be stored, handled, transported and disposed of safely, following manufacturers instructions and relevant guidance.

Only trained and authorised personnel may handle or apply any such substances, and suitable PPE will be provided and used as required by the assessment.

Public and Client Safety

Many gardening activities take place in areas accessible to clients, residents, visitors and the general public. We will plan and carry out our work to minimise risk to others by:

Using barriers, signs or temporary restrictions where necessary. Scheduling higher risk tasks to avoid busy periods where possible. Controlling access to work areas where machinery is operating. Keeping work areas tidy and promptly clearing debris and waste.

We ask clients to co-operate by respecting any temporary restrictions, keeping children and pets away from active work areas, and informing us of any specific site hazards they are aware of.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences and near misses must be reported to management as soon as possible. Gardeners Hatton will investigate these events, record findings and implement corrective actions to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Emergency procedures will be in place for foreseeable situations, including injuries, fire, fuel spills and severe weather. Employees will be briefed on what to do in an emergency, including how to obtain assistance and how to make sites safe for others.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

Gardeners Hatton will monitor health and safety performance through inspections, incident reporting, feedback from employees and clients, and periodic reviews of this policy and associated procedures. We are committed to continuous improvement and will update this policy as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice, our services and operational experience.

This Health and Safety Policy is communicated to all employees and is made available to clients and interested parties on request.
